The Scale of Beast Games

Filming the largest reality competition in television history requires more than just a large crew. It demands equipment that can withstand the pressure of a huge television production. Amazon Prime’s Beast Games Season 2, hosted by Mr. Beast, set a new standard for scale.

The production utilized over 400 cameras, including 35 ARRI Alexa 35s, operated by a team of over 100 professionals. With contestants competing for a $5 million prize, every second of footage is critical. There are no second takes in a live reality environment.

Reliability in a High-RF Environment

One of the primary technical hurdles was maintaining communication in a venue saturated with radio frequencies. With 140 channels of audio and video transmission, wireless interference was a major concern.

Director of Photography Russell Leggett noted the reliability of Tilta’s wireless systems in this challenging environment. The camera department relied heavily on the Tilta Nucleus-M II Wireless Lens Control System. Despite the heavy RF traffic, the crew maintained consistent control over focus and zoom without signal drops, a feat Leggett described as a significant achievement for the production.

Speed and Efficiency with the Mirage Pro

In unscripted content, speed is paramount. Operators cannot pause the action to swap filters. To solve this, the production utilized the Tilta Mirage Pro Matte Box with a prototype Electronic Variable ND (END) system.

This allowed operators to adjust exposure instantly as lighting conditions changed across the massive set. The ability to control density remotely meant that the camera team never missed a reaction or a critical game moment due to technical adjustments.

Operator Feedback on the Nucleus-M II

For the camera operators on the ground, gear ergonomics are vital. Jake Stephenson and other operators highlighted the tactile advantages of the Nucleus-M II.

Specific features stood out during the shoot

  • Pressure Sensitivity The zoom toggle offered precise control, allowing for smooth, dynamic framing adjustments on the fly.
  • Interchangeable Components The ability to customize the hand unit with different thumbwheels allowed operators to tailor the rig to their personal preference.
  • Tactile Feel The updated focus wheel provided the necessary resistance and feedback required for critical focus pulling on cinema lenses.

Supporting Creators at Every Level

Yang Shao, CEO of Tilta North America, emphasized that the collaboration on Beast Games reflects Tilta’s broader mission. The goal is to develop products that are reliable enough for high-end cinema productions while remaining accessible to independent creators.

By combining the Nucleus-M II, Mirage Pro, and Lightweight Shoulder Rig, the Beast Games crew successfully managed a complex, high-pressure shoot, proving that the right gear can make the impossible manageable. Watch Beast Games Season 2 on Prime Video today.
